D.A. Pennebaker

DA Pennebaker
No one has done more to capture the spirit of American music and transform the art of the documentary than filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker.  Born in Evanston, Ill., in 1925, Pennebaker changed the documentary forever in 1967 with his intimate and gritty profile of Bob Dylan in Don't Look Back; his footage of the Monterey Pop festival, release a year later as Monterey Pop, became one of the decade's visual touchstones.  Pennebaker pioneered the "Direct Cinema" format, which did away with narration, interviews and scripted sequences in favor of candid hand-camera shots that capitalized on natural drama.  His most recent film, Al Franken: God Spoke (2006), captured two frenzied years of the pundit's life, leading up to the last presidential election.
